EXPO2015 - The role of Nutrition in future Health: the Gender Challenge

EXPO site - Swiss Pavillon 8th July 2015 from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m

Health is a pre-condition as well as an outcome of all three dimensions of sustainable development
(environmental, social and economic). Human health is directly affected by environmental degradation
and climate change, undermining the right to health. Promoting universal access to health care and
healthy environments (including water and sanitation, clean air, etc.) can significantly minimize these
impacts. Food and nutrition insecurity and ill health are associated with poverty and gender inequality: 60
percent of chronically hungry people are women and girls. Furthermore, globally and with few exceptions,
rural women fare worse than rural men and urban women and men for every indicator for which data are
available.
We will talk about this with:
Ilaria Capua, Director, Division of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Istituto Zooprofilattico delle Venezie; Member of the Italian Parliament; Vice President of Culture, Science and Education Commission,
Padua
Kathleen Sebelius, Former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Washington, DC
Nicola Bedlington, Secretary General European Patients Forum, Brussels
Vera Regitz-Zagrosek, Director of the Institute of Gender in Medicine, Berlin
Moderator:
Linda Douglass, Media Professional, Wife of the US Ambassador to Italy, Rome
